About the tool

Kindle categories you can actually rank in

The Author Atlas Category Finder suggests Amazon Kindle categories that fit your book and shows how hard each one is to break into. Enter your genre keywords or tropes, plus an optional plot summary. You'll get a ranked list of category paths with a similarity score, a competition score, and the estimated daily ebook sales needed to reach #1 and #50 in each chart. Each category links to its live Amazon bestseller page so you can check it yourself.

How to choose Amazon categories that sell

Why categories matter

Categories tell the store where to shelve your book. You can select three categories in KDP. They decide which bestseller charts you compete in — and a #1 badge is a visible signal on that shelf.

Understand ABSR

Every book has a Best Sellers Rank. Within a category, the lowest ABSR is #1. The tool converts rank into estimated daily sales so you can compare categories — but treat numbers as a snapshot, not a promise.

Balance relevance and competition

  • The best fit — the most specific category your book clearly belongs in.
  • The realistic win — a relevant niche where launch sales could reach the top 50 or #1.
  • A different angle — setting, theme or sub-genre that reaches another reader group.

Tip

Drill down to the deepest sub-category that genuinely fits. Specific shelves are usually less crowded.

Never pick a category your book doesn't belong in

Misleading categorisation can get categories removed and attracts the wrong readers. A high competition score only helps when similarity is high too.

Keep keywords and categories in sync

After picking categories, align your KDP keywords and book description. If nothing fits, revisit your concept with Write to Market.

FAQ

Amazon category questions, answered

How many categories can I choose on Amazon KDP?

You can select three categories per book in KDP. Choose the most specific sub-categories that genuinely describe your book. Amazon also places you in the broader parent categories above them.

How do I find less competitive Amazon categories?

Look at the sales needed to reach #1 in each category, not just how popular the genre sounds. In this tool, sort your shortlist by competition score and sales for rank 1, but only among categories with a high similarity score. Then click through to Amazon to confirm the books there look like yours.

What is ABSR on Amazon?

ABSR stands for Amazon Best Sellers Rank. It's a number based on a book's recent sales compared with every other book in the store, so a lower number means more sales. Within a category, the book with the lowest ABSR is #1.

How many sales does it take to be #1 in an Amazon category?

It varies a lot by category and changes throughout the day. In our example, one niche cozy category needed an estimated 96 ebook sales a day for #1, while the broader Cozy chart needed over 1,200. The Sales for rank 1 column gives you a current estimate for comparison.

Can I change my book's categories after publishing?

Yes. Go to your KDP Bookshelf, choose Edit details, and update your categories in the Categories section. Changes can take up to 72 hours to show on Amazon.

What happens if I pick the wrong category?

You'll reach readers who weren't looking for your book, which hurts conversions and can lead to poor reviews. Amazon may also remove or change categories that don't match your content. Relevance should always come first.

Do I need an account to use the Category Finder?

No. You can run a search right away. The sales and rank figures are estimates for comparing categories, not guarantees.
